Abraham Lincoln was born on Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer. He married Mary Todd and had 12 children, with only 2 living past the age of 12. Lincoln was elected the 16th President on November 6, 1860. He led the country through the Civil War and is famous for his Gettysburg Address. Despite the fact he led the country with great strength, even through the countries greatest internal crisis, he suffered from depression his whole life.
Abraham Lincoln lived through many losses of loved ones, starting at a young age. Some events affected him more than others. After the death of a women he loved his friends felt the need to remove all razors and weapons from his house with the belief he had gone crazy. As President, Lincoln learned to live with negative thoughts and not dwell on them. He used methods such as humor and story-telling to hide his depressive state. Only his closest friends knew of his condition. Fortunately Lincoln's depression did not affect his career. He used inner strength and was able to beat his depression for his country.
Depression affects many people everywhere. There is all different extents of depression in people and some people can fight it better than others. Nowadays we have therapy and medicine for people affected with this disorder. For people in Lincoln's time and even after it were unaware of positive thinking and cognitive therapy. Even now there isnt a for sure cure for depression. I think it seems like a very diffucult thing to live with. Lincoln had great determination to overcome it and do all he did as president.
